A wonderful groundbreaking ceremony for the new Visitors’ Orientation and Education Center was held on June 3, 2008 and was a resounding success! The new 10,000 square foot state of the art “green” building is a public-private partnership among the Cylburn Arboretum Association, the Federated Garden Clubs of Maryland, the Horticultural Society of Maryland and Baltimore City Department of Recreation and Parks.A wonderful Green technologies will reduce the building’s impact on the environment with plans for a green roof, composting toilets, geothermal heating and cooling. A well-landscaped and newly designed parking lot will bring vehicles into a central location and will allow most of the Arboretum’s grounds to remain a quiet and relaxing pedestrian experience. The building will also contain a 250-seat meeting hall.
Other capital improvements on the grounds concurrent
with the new building construction include an expanded
main entrance and renovated drive, a new service road,
utility and data upgrades throughout the property ,
enhanced pedestrian circulation, and a modernization
of the production greenhouse and maintenance staff facilities.
A completion date in 2009 is expected.
