We’ve decked the halls with boughs of holly….so don ye gay apparel!  Enjoy the afternoon and usher in the holiday with a high tea at the Victorian Cylburn Mansion.  Gilman School’s Traveling Men, a capella singing group, will serenade you as you enjoy a selection of teas, sandwiches and sweets.   $35 for members; $45 for non-members   Purchase a reserved table for 8 at $280.

Boxwood Wreath-making workshop
6:30 p.m.- 8:30 p.m.
Greenhouse Classroom


Create unique, festive boxwood wreaths to usher in the holiday season led by Cylburn Gardener Pat Sherman.  Ms. Sherman is an experienced wreath-maker.   Included in the price is a soft touch double rail clamp-on ring used to construct the wreaths.  The frame is reusable.  Wreath-making is one of the easiest and most popular holiday crafts.   Bring clippers, 3 ½ to 4 feet of wired edged ribbon for a puff bow, and other decorative items to add.   Make this workshop a holiday tradition!   Wreath size: 24 inches  Fee:  $25 per wreath for members; $30 per wreath for non-members.  $20 for each additional wreath.   Please call 410-367-2217 to sign up and register.   Payment is required at the time of registration.  Space is limited.

Boxwood Tree Workshop 
10 a.m.- 12 noon.
Greenhouse Classroom


Build a unique, long lasting tree from fresh boxwood!  Decorate it with simple glass ball ornaments and bows!  Set it in your favorite Christmas spot!  Or give it as a very special, hand-made gift.  Your teacher will be an artist and middle school art teacher who has been building and decorating these trees for many years.   Fee:  $25 per tree for members; $30 for non-members.   Call 410-367-2217 for reservations.   Fee due at the time of registration.

Kissing Ball workshop

A Floral Design for your Christmas Table

Let us help you present a festive table for your Christmas guest be that family and/or friends. All will exclaim in delight at the gorgeous table arrangement that you will have set before them either on the dining table, sideboard or at the buffet table. Bring that scent of pine into your home. Learn to incorporate cut poinsettias into your design. It is truly a time of wonder!!
This workshop will be lead by three designers from western Maryland; Cathy Karl, Patsy Ransom and Marilyn Potter. Cathy has been a long time member of garden clubs and is a Flower Show Judge. She is a florist at the family Zimmerman’s Florist. Patsy brings her designing expertise learned from years of being part of her church flower ministry and study of Japanese Floral Design. Marilyn is a 20 year garden club veteran, a Flower Show Judge and a National Flower Show School Instructor.

Create a decoration for an outside tree for your favorite backyard animals.    Using natural products, garlands will be created to string on a tree providing backyard animals or birds a treat.    $5 member; $8 non-member

Come and enjoy the exquisite and outstanding work of Cylburn Photo Walk students and instructor Antonio (Tony) Amador in this wonderful exhibition full of color, iconic images and the best Cylburn offers. Ancient trees, intriguing flowers, fall leaves and the idyllic Cylburn landscape; all captured virtuously by these artists of the lens. Techniques include Bokeh, Black and White, Abstract, Photo-Impressionist, Macro, Close-up, Inspirational, Iconic, Minimalism, and more .  Works will be exhibited as museum quality matted giclée prints as well as stretched canvases, personally printed in an instructor-artist collaboration. They will be hand signed on verso by artist and available for sale at competitive prices.   Proceeds will go to the Cylburn Arboretum Association helping to support the mission of maintaining the grounds and offering educational programs for the public. 

 

Winter Botanical Art and Illustration

Botanical Art and Illustration is a centuries-old traditional art form combining art and science in an effort to communicate information about plants through beautiful and scientifically accurate renderings.  This art form is becoming an increasing popular method for teaching about plants, as habitat degradation and climate change so drastically affect native species.   Learn the skills to render plants in remarkable scientific detail and the artistic techniques needed to create beautiful and lasting plant portraits.  Beginners will acquire new knowledge and skills, and experienced artists will refine techniques and find fresh directions for their work. All students enjoy small classes in a positive and encouraging atmosphere.   Instructor Molly Hoopes, who studied Botanical Illustration at Gage Academy and at Brookside Gardens School of Botanical Art and Illustration, is a member of the American Society of Botanical Artists. Growing Up at Cylburn:  Winter Series
Wednesday, January 18-February 22

Growing up at Cylburn is a nature-themed series for preschool children ages 3-5.   The program will run from 10-11:00 a.m. on Wednesdays.   The Growing Up program introduces preschool children to the natural world and the principles of ecology and conservation.  Classes are offered as a session of six sessions led by Lili Donnelly Levy.  Ms. Levy served as the Director of the Cylburn Nature Science Camp this past summer.   She is a graduate of the Maryland Institute College of Art and has had a lifelong interest in nature.  An activity and snack will accompany each session.  Enrollment is limited to 15 children, so early registration is recommended.   The fee for a session of six classes is $60 for members and $70 for the general public.  (individual sessions $15)

Perfect winter activity for families with children anxious to get out of the house!  So bundle up, grab your gloves, boots and winter coats and join a Cylburn naturalist for a guided walk through the woods to search for signs of winter wildlife.  Learn how plants and animals survive the winter season.    Afterwards, enjoy hot cocoa in the Cylburn Mansion.   The Nature Museum will be open.

Fee:  Member $5 per person;  Families  4+:  $20
